Diet and Wellness  //

Taylor Regional Radiation Oncology has the support of dedicated clinical dietians who provide personalized nutrition planning tailored to your specific diagnosis and treatment.

Eating well during treatment can help you feel better and maintain your strength and energy.  It can also keep your immune system stronger, which will enable you to tolerate treatment related side effects better and recover faster.  The following suggestions are a great place to start:

  • Eat 6 to 10 small meals or snacks daily

  • Eat your largest meal when you are the hungriest

  • Avoid foods that are greasy, spicy, or fatty

  • If odors bother you, choose to eat foods cold or at room temperature or leave the kitchen while food is being prepared.

  • Eat according to the time:  i.e. eat every two hours - set an alarm to remind you to eat.

Nutrition After Cancer Treatment

Your post treatment diet should be very similar to the diet recommended to prevent cancer.  The following tips may be helpful for cancer survivors:

  • Eat soy based foods

  • Eat no more than 18 oz. of red meats (beef, lamb, pork or venison) per week and avoid processed meats (bacon and hot dogs)

  • Limit your added sugar intake

  • There is no evidence that dietary supplements lower your cancer risks or improve survival instead eat more fruits and vegetables.

  • Vegetarian diets can be healthy but have not been shown to reduce the risk of cancer recurrence.

  • American Cancer Society recommends 150 minutes of moderate activity (walking) per week

Nutrition to Prevent Cancer

A healthy diet is one with many colors and uses the following suggestion:

  • Lots of fruits and vegetables

  • Plant based and lean proteins

  • Plant based fats such as olive oil

  • Whole grains

  • Limited alcohol intake (two or fewer drinks per day)
